Gamblin Artist Oil Colors Introductory Set Review

Sunday, August 30, 2020

I bought an artist grade set from Gamblin on Amazon, and I want it to share my impressions on this set and also on the paint quality.

We all know how expensive artist grade oil paint can be. Sometimes is hard from students to move on from student grade paint to an artist quality paint. But after trying out this set from Gamblin, you don't have to pay that much for quality in oil paint.

They are reasonable priced. Their paints are mixed with linseed oil. Remember that artist quality paint has no fillers only the pigment and the carrier which in this case if linseed oil.

Not only you receive nine colors but also a cradle panel ready to use.

In the following pictures below you will see what you get with this introductory set.

The set contains nine 37ml artist grade paint.

The back shows the colors included on this kit plus the cradle panel.

The paint is inserted inside the panel.

The following pictures shows you the panel that already has been primed with gesso.

After the pictures there if a video where I review this set on my Youtube channel.

A Peach

Thursday, March 21, 2019

Oil painting of a peach on a 9x12 canvas mounted on a wood panel.

"Fried"

Sunday, March 17, 2019

Like the tittle says this is an oil painting done on a 8x10 canvas panel.
I used a limited palette on this one. The colors I used were cadmium yellow, cadmium red, burnt umber, payne's grey and titanium white. This is the way I like to keep practicing to better my skills as an artist.

What I do is to:
1. Pick an easy subject. Simple enough to do a quick drawing of it.
2. I prefer the subject to be one color or limited colors.

Doing these to simple steps it will allow me to do a quick painting!

Green Apple

Saturday, March 16, 2019

This is an oil painting done of a green apple. It was painted on a 6x6 Centurion linen canvas panel.
This was painted using Alla Prima technique and by the way this is not a real apple. Is a fake fruit made of foam. It very convenient to have some fake fruits to hone your skills (you don't have to worry if somebody is going to eat your setup).

Modelo Especial

Monday, February 18, 2019

This is my latest painting of a beer can. In this case Modelo Especial.
It was done on 9x12 hardboard panel.
I started the painting about a week ago but couldn't get back to it until this past weekend.
It was fun doing this painting specially when it was time to make the lettering on the can.
I took the smallest brush I had to reproduce the small letters.
If you could magnify (specially the cursive words)
you could not make anything out of it. I just mimic what I saw.

If you have any comments leave them below. Thanks!

Banana Study

Saturday, February 9, 2019

This is a study of a banana. Took me less than an hour using alla prima method.
Did it with oils on a 6x6 hardboard panel.

Vase With An Apple

Sunday, February 3, 2019

This is a small ceramic bottle vase that I have for my still life painting. I had not use it before but this time I have it next to an apple. I really like how the shape of the vase came about with good proportions.

Above you see the drawing of the set up. This is a simple set up of a still life that you can do. Is great for practice and as you progress you can add more subject and make it a little more challenging.

This is the drawing side by side the still life. If you notice there is a cord hanging in front of the set up (from my point of view is almost at the center of the vase). What you do is to draw the vertical line on your surface and start to take measurements using the cord as reference. This will help you to get the right proportions. I used a proportional divider but you also can use a pencil to take the measurements.
